Daria spent over a year at ChildrensHospital in Cincinnati specializing in pediatric pathology under Dr. Landingsdirection.</p><p>After her return to Queens University and as a pediatric pathologist at theKingston General Hospital, there began a slow evolution of a friendship that intime was sharedwith Darias husbandHeinz and later with Bens lovely wife Dottie.</p><p>Bens genius was one of the most important guide lights in Darias professionallife.</p><p>The measure of a fullled and well-lived life lies among steadfast friendships,such is the one we have shared with Daria. I have the great pleasure of knowing Dr. Haust from early days in theAmerican Association of Pathologists and Bacteriologists and the American Societyfor the Study of Atherosclerosis. Both of these organizations have since changed theirnames, but we have continued to meet as friends and colleagues in meetings,especially the Council on Arteriosclerosis of the American Heart Association andthe International Academy of Pathology both in its U.S.Canadian Division and inits International Organization.</p><p>We made special arrangements to meet socially as well as scientically duringthese frequent national and international meetings. This kind of relationshiphas been further enhanced by visits between Kingston, Ontario, Canada, andNew Orleans, Louisiana. Dr. Haust has been a frequent visiting professor andlecturer in the department of pathology at the Louisiana State University Schoolof Medicine. I have been able to visit her at Queens University in Kingston,Ontario.</p><p>Dr. Haust has had an illustrious and praise-worthy career; she has been apioneer and most productive investigator in both atherosclerosis and pediatricpathology. After years of being together discussing and debating issues in athero-sclerosis research, one of my fondestmemories is of attending her installation as pre-sident of the Society for Pediatric Pathology.</p><p>Daria is a strong-willed, highly motivated, and informed academic pathologistbut who also has a kind, gentle, and sympathetic personality.</p><p>Dr.M. This iswhy it is such a great pleasure for me to add to the celebration of Dr. Hausts life,career, and accomplishments.</p><p>Professor Ryszard Gryglewski. Before knowing her in person, I hadheard many times about Professor M. Daria Haust as an unquestionableauthority in studying pathogenesis of atherosclerosis. Her very special approachto that problem, originally addressed by Carl Rokitansky and Rudolf V|rchow,consisted of studying the morphology of atherosclerosis in children and in veryyoung people. Therefore, she had a chance to detect very early footsteps of theapproaching disaster. When for the rst time, I heard her and I saw herhistological evidence in Nekoma ( Japan) during the Saratoga Conference in1993, I became convinced about vascular smooth muscle being transformed tofoam cells. I understood the degree of her originality and individuality inscience. It was then, to my surprise, I heard her speaking Polish with anabsolutely charming prewar accent that now is only rarely heard from thetheatre stage. She conquered my mind and my heart and, after coming back toCracow, I proposed to bestow on her the title of honorary doctor of our over-600-year-old Jagiellonian University.</p><p>The ceremony was great, and a circle of her admirers considerably expanded.She looked magnicent in her honorary doctorate gown with a blue ribbon acrossher left shoulder. Not long ago, my son (who is a freshly baked medical historian)asked me whowas this magnicent lady professor whose picture has been hangingat the Collegium Maius (the oldest part of the University). Then I told him abouther, and I had to supply him with reprints of her papers. Luckily, I had anotherchance to meet this unusual couple, Daria and Heinz, during several scienticmeetings, and each time it was the most attractive experience. I also observed withpleasure her increasing worldwide popularity.</p><p>With my wife Teresa, we agree she is one of those rare people with a uniquequality: the great scientist also is an enchanting personality.</p><p>Professor A. I cannot remember exactly when I met Daria forthe rst time. It was probably on the occasion of a pediatric pathology sessionduring an International Academy of Pathology (IAP) meeting. Certainly, Iwas anxious about presenting the paper that I had prepared and greatlyintimidated to have to talk before such a select audience. Intuitively Dariasensed my shyness and came up to me with words of friendly encouragement.Indeed, one of the most remarkable traits of her character was her interest inforeigners which was reected in her constant eort to establish pediatricpathology on an international basis. She achieved this by creating andsupporting for, as long as she could, the International Pediatric PathologyAssociation.</p><p>I am indebted to Daria for helping me to enter international pediatric patho-logy circles. She took me under her wing and introduced me to the most famouspediatric pathologists of the time. On her initiative, I was soon on a rst namebasiswith Ben Landing, Harvey Rosenberg, John Kissane, a familiarity totally unheardof in our European countries.</p><p>Internationally minded and a passionate supporter of her discipline, Dariaalways watched for the opportunity to slip pediatric pathology sessions into theagenda of any pathology or pediatrics meetings. Then she managed to put onthe most suitable program, sending out worldwide invitations and looking after allthe details.This was done in a very friendly but capable way and always with herown personal touch.</p><p>The results were there. Under her inuence, pediatric pathology became a dis-cipline in its own right and became recognized as such in many foreign countrieswhere it had hitherto been neglected or even ignored.</p><p>Professor W.E.
